Doing Good Does You Good

So, it’s Mental Health Awareness week this week and the theme this year is #kindness.

In this unprecedented time of social distancing and the worries and anxiety that this inevitably causes, could this perhaps be the most important and timely theme that the Mental Health Foundation have run?

Their own research shows that protecting mental health during this time is central to us coping with and recovering from the pandemic – with the psychological and social impacts likely to outlast the physical symptoms of the virus.

“We have chosen kindness because of its singular ability to unlock our shared humanity. Kindness strengthens relationships, develops community and deepens solidarity. It is a cornerstone of our individual and collective mental health. Wisdom from every culture across history recognises that kindness is something that all human beings need to experience and practise to be fully alive.” – Mental Health Foundation

We couldn’t agree more! Did you know that showing kindness towards others is also greatly beneficial towards your own Mental Health? Doing good, does you good!

According to a 2013 study, showing kindness through volunteering is directly linked to lowering the risk of hypertension and can have a significant impact on your blood pressure. In addition, according to an extensive review of 40 studies on the effect of kindness on general health and happiness, the BMC Public Health found that – along with improved well-being and life satisfaction – it is also linked to decreased depression. Recipients of kindness generally want to perpetuate kindness to others, making each act of kindness exponentially bigger. Win, win for all involved then!

So, let’s all take the opportunity this week to elevate our levels of kindness. Use Mental Health Awareness week as your excuse to send that motivational text to a friend who is struggling, reach out via a video call to that neighbour who is experiencing loneliness due to self-isolating, arrange that “virtual” cup of tea with someone you know would love the company right now… However you decide to deliver your #kindness this week, let’s all get involved and make that difference.
